How to Launch Your Self-Hosted WordPress Blog

How to Launch Your Self-Hosted WordPress Blog

If you are in business, you NEED your own blog.

Success leaves clues, and every great marketer has a self-hosted blog.

Your blog is like a piece of internet real-estate that you own. The information will never be lost. It’s an ever-growing asset that gives you a powerful online presence and brands you as a LEADER in front of your prospects (your target market).

QUICKTIP! Link your social media profiles on your blog to grow your social media presence, build new relationships, and drive traffic. Accomplish this with the “Social Media Widget” WP plugin. Learn more about plugins below!

Blogging is very effective in terms of marketing,
because it allows you to build a relationship with your prospects very easily.

You can write articles, shoot videos, or do both.
Whatever you choose,
remember that creating blog content consistently is also very important.

If you are unfamiliar with WordPress…

WordPress is a very popular, and easy to maintain, blogging platform.

A self-hosted WordPress blog is a blog that you own – you own the server that your blog domain is hosted on. You have to pay roughly $5.00 a month for hosting but here’s the advantage…

Simply, it’s more UNIQUE.

As as entrepreneur and as a marketer, it’s important that you
create a unique brand that will seperate you from the other people in your industry.

Hosting your own blog gives you full control and
sets a foundation for the growth of your unique online brand.

Here’s how to launch your self-hosted WordPress blog…

Step #1 – Get a Domain Name for Your Blog

You can get domains at several different websites, but I recommend HostGator or GoDaddy. Put thought into your domain name. Since your blog is branding YOU, choose something that is unique. It could be your name (like this blog meetcollinsampson.com) or you could choose something that is related to your industry (mlmsuccesstips.com). Choose carefully because you cannot change the domain name after it has been registered.

Step #2 – Get Hosting for Your Domain

To have full control of your domain, you need hosting. I went with HostGator for my hosting also – to keep things consistent between my domains and hosting. Another perk with HostGator is the automatic WordPress installation which allows you to start blogging right away. Choose the hosting plan that meets your needs. If you are only hosting a blog, and no other websites, the basic hosting plan is all you’ll need to start. After you’ve purchased a hosting plan, you will receive an important welcome email containing information that will be used in the next steps.

Step #3 – Connect Domain to Hosting

In this step, we are going to connect your domain to your hosting. If you are using HostGator for both your domains and your hosting, skip this step. If you registered your domain at GoDaddy, continue reading. You should have received a welcome email from your hosting provider in the previous step. This email contains important information about your hosting plan, so keep it somewhere safe. To continue your blog setup, access that welcome email and look for your “nameservers”. Those nameservers will connect your domain to your hosting. Go to your domain provider (GoDaddy in this case), and access your domain management. Open your new domain, then paste your “nameservers” into the appropriate data fields.

Step #4 – Install WordPress (Automatic installation if using HostGator)

The hard part is done! Now, we just need to install WordPress on your domain so that you can start blogging! If you are using HostGator for your hosting, just access your HostGator control panel and download WordPress – this will only take a few seconds. Once WordPress has been downloaded, you will be ready to rock n’ roll.

Step #5 – Get WordPress Themes (Free vs. Not Free)

You have a few options here. If you are strapped for cash, download a free theme from WordPress.org or NewWPThemes.com. If you want a theme that is more unique, you can purchase WordPress themes. I purchased a bundle of cool WP themes from ElegantThemes.com because they are very easy to control and they look professional. Don’t try too hard on appearance, your blog doesn’t have to look like “a million bucks” to be effective.

Step #6 – Install Your Theme in WordPress

After you’ve downloaded a theme that you are happy with, you need to install that theme in WordPress. This will apply your theme to your domain. Access your domain and look for “Appearance” on your WordPress options menu. Click on “Appearance” and then click “Themes”. Browse your computer for the file that contains your theme (this should be a .zip file) and install it on your domain. After installing your theme, visit your website to ensure it has been installed successfully. It’s all coming together!

Step #7 – Install the Basic Plugins

You don’t necessarily NEED these plugins, but they are highly recommended. To install plugins, access your domain and look for “Plugins” on your WordPress options menu. Click on “Plugins” and then click “Add New”. Add these plugins to your domain:

  • Akismet – for much-needed spam protection.
  • WP Super Cache – to speed up your WordPress blog significantly.
  • Google Analytics – for data tracking purposes.
  • Social Media Widget – to link your social media profiles on your blog.
  • WordPress SEO by Yoast – your all-in-one SEO solution for WordPress.

All Set? What I Want You to Do Next…

Now that you have a self-hosted blog,
you have created your online presence – a personal brand that you can build-on every day.

Setting up your blog was EASY…

The success of your blog will be determined by the content you create,
your consistency,

and how well you are able to promote your content.

Learn how to drive targeted traffic to your blog with smart SEO. Creating good content is important,
but it’s useless if nobody can find it.

Provide value to your website visitors, make it easy for them to find you on social media,
and setup your blog to capture leads and/or make sales – if that is your goal.

What will you do next?

That’s up to you,
but I recommend you start by creating a marketing plan to ensure your blogging efforts are consistent
and then dive into SEO! (You’ll find great SEO training on this blog!)

Congratulations! You have your own self-hosted WordPress blog…

Don’t you have something to say? :)

  2. Nice job creating a little blueprint for the process of getting set up online. The importance of a domain can never be overstated, its the most important part of your online presence since you own it. Sounds like if anyone needs advice about how to get started online, that you’d be the person to ask!

    • Hey thanks Caleb, appreciate your words. You’re very right, a domain is the foundation of your online brand. I’d be quick to help where the help is needed! I think getting started online is crucial for biz owners today, but it’s also easy to feel like you have to go “overboard” with your blog, so I’m happy to share this simple blueprint for anyone that’s searching.
